ROZ Beste leads a more balanced life than most.
The Kew East information technology trainer spends much of her spare
time peddling about Boroondara on a bike with just one wheel.
Beste, 36, has mastered the tricky art of unicycle riding made famous by
circus clowns the world over.
But while the unicycle is popular under the big top, Beste says its
attraction goes much further.
Beste recently returned from the Australian National Unicycling
Championships in Darwin with gold, silver and bronze medals.
At the championships people compete in everything from track races to
unicycle hockey, basketball and mountain racing.
"It's a fun sport and just something different that keeps you fit,"
Beste said.
"It takes a few hours to learn but that is half the challenge.
"I think for adults, if you don't try different things, you feel like
you're just getting older and this makes me feel young."
Beste won two gold, three silver and four bronze medals in her second
national titles.
She competed in the World Unicycle Championships in Beijing in 2000.
She also spent six weeks riding a unicycle across China.
