I have a basic adjustable dumbbell set, in which the lightest plate is
2.5 lbs. Since I'm a bit of a weakling still, I do need to adjust the
weight by increments less than 5 lbs - so, would it it do any harm if I
were to put on only one 2.5 lb plate on one side of a dumbbell? Or is
it not good to have it unbalanced this way? Or does it build extra
wrist strength? Or should I shell out the major $$$$ for fractional
    plates?

I'll be very grateful for any advice.

Don't fool around with those pansy weights. Just load up with as much weight
as possible on the bar and go for it. If you need to cheat, then cheat. A
good rule of thumb is to find your absolute max, then add 20 pounds on top
of that to the bar. No pain, no gain. You should be doing sets with reps of
1 or 2 maximum. Go all out and always to failure. You should be doing this
every day for each muscle group and remember to keep your protein as low as
    possible. I hope this helps.
