I just want to ride my bike. I don't want to futz
    around with funny shoes.

    =v= I like this product:

    http://www.powergrips.com/

It accommodates a variety of non-funny shoes, better
    than toe clips IMHO.

    - - They do look kind of goofy, but IMHO they are the next
best thing to clipless pedals and shoes. Much better than
clips and straps with ordinary shoes.

_ Clips and straps aren't as useful as you might think. You
really need an agressive tread on the shoe or cleats to get much
out of them. They'll help you spin faster, which can be more
efficient. Basically, if you can pull your foot straight back out
of whatever is attaching foot to pedal it's hard to improve the
    efficiency of your stroke.

_ Clipless pedals aren't magic, it takes a fair amount of
practice to get a pedal stroke that can take full advantage of
them. Many people believe that learning to ankle and pull
through the tops and bottoms is not really doing much to
make you go faster or easier. I'm not one of them, but even after
30 years I'm still working on perfecting it.

Ther's a tradeoff you have to make between efficiency and
    non-goofiness. If you're a hard-core, high-category cyclo-sportif
type, then efficiency takes it. If you're just going on a beer run,
    non-goofiness takes it.

They're dangerous in that when your foot twists, they trap your foot -- not
    good in a crash.

Pedaling at higher cadences is actually less efficient.

Pulling back on pedals doesn't improve efficiency.

That would be anybody who has studied it.

Maybe in another 30 you'll get it.
