Anyway personally I don't think clips and straps are

anywhere near equivalent - firstly they also only work on one side of
    the
pedal, and if you were taking your foot in and out you'd still find you
    have
to rotate the pedal - ...

Toe clips will make the pedal hang a predictable way and are just as
easy to insert your foot into as double sided clipless or looks and
    similar

...and secondly the straps won't hold the pedal to the

foot as tightly as clips anyway unless you do them up tight, and then
    you
won't be able to get your foot out when you need to put one down.

my experience has always been that in an energency your foot always
comes out of clips or clipless. This is not to say that it is
impossible to fall without unclipping but I have only ever fallen with
spds (once, when they were new).

IMO if you are clipping in and out often enough for clipless to offer a
big advantage over tightening the straps on clips then it is arguable
whether platforms wouldn't be more appropriate and you can always use
clips without doing the straps up tight. Off-road might offer an
advantage, I have not the experience to comment

If my memory serves me well this is true for road riding, indeed I cut my
teeth riding a fixed with toe-clips and little ally shoe plates and
    managed.
However off-road is a different matter, you really don't need to be faffing
about with toe-clips when trying to re-engage after a quick dab on a
technical climb (the clip catches the terrain and flips the pedal).
