Tonight was venison steak and summer squash, both cooked on the grill. This was my first venison, aside from a small piece of sausage when I was little. Boy, that stuff is lean! Looked like liver when it was raw. I wasn't totally enthralled with just salt and pepper on the meat, so I'm using A1 sauce. The sauce lends a little moisture, too. Our neighbor, who killed and butchered the deer, said he usually marinates his in teriyaki sauce. I'll try that if I can get my hands on some teriyaki sauce.

Even though I was brought up in the woods of Michigan, I never ate the wildlife.... my family didn't hunt or fish (I lived on a lake). So, my first encounter with venison was at a "dude ranch" in Arizona when I was 10ish. They grilled venison steaks outside (of course) over wood (another given in those days) and they were terrific! It sold me on venison.
OH MY GAWD…. the dude ranch I went to as a kid still exists! http://www.saguarolakeranch.com/lodging.html I think the owners names were John & Dottie at the time. It was soooo cool and it hasn't visibly changed! I wonder if they still put guests names on mugs and hang them on the wall?
