An update. Thanks to a helpful suggestion, I stopped by a nearby
community gym and weighed myself there, and then, soon afterwards, at
home. The good news is that my home scale is relatively accurate, the
gym scale reads only 0.4 lbs lower than my home scale. The bad news is
that I really did gain weight, approximately 2.2 lbs (my today's
weight is about 2 lbs less than yesterday).

I think that, for now, I will concentrate on not straying from my diet
too far and getting enough exercise, and will see if "eating less" is
necessary. If it is, I will eat less.

Any chance your scale was, for a period of time, reading too low, and is
now back to a correct reading again?

I would like to not think so. 🙂

Seriously, the most likely possibility at this point is that I really
    did gain real weight.

The only reason I ask this, is that you also said your wife gained 15
pounds over the same time, according to the same scale. By any chance,
do you have graphs/tables of the weight gain during this time period,
and just prior to the gain? (I worked in the industrial measurement and
controls field for around 15 years and am very curious in what actually
happened.) I'm contemplating getting a Tanita scale myself.

Chris I have the basic Tanita which has been very reliable (too
reliable) over the past five years. I contemplated getting the Body Fat
Montor model but since I get obsessive during nutrition tracking
periods this will just add to the neurosis. What I put into my mouth
and the energy I exert are what matters and adding yet another feature
to factor in is counter indicated in my case.

(After all what are you goung to do with somneone who has dieted for
over 60 years and still counts apricot halves? :-)

I lost my original Diet Sleuth program in a recent Mac OSX upgrade and
am back in the claws of Fitday which lists fifteen versions of items
like boneless chicken, obviously scammed from the USDA site.

Hoping you will make the original version of DS available to me as i
    sent you my license number.
