There was the mention of having a pantry in another thread. The thread
reminded me of certain items I always keep on hand. For lack of a better
word I'll call them staples. Currently in the pantry (among other things-
the list is too long) I have 12 cans of tomatoes (several different kinds),
I buy canned tomatoes frequently and may have extras from
time to time but usually just buy them when I need them. Not
really a staple in my kitchen.
Quoted message said:dried pastas (several different kinds),
Same as above.
Quoted message said:flour, sugar,
Now *these* are staples.
Quoted message said:canned soup
Never use.
Quoted message said:and broth
Same as tomatoes
Quoted message said:box cereal
Rarely use. Don't keep around.
Quoted message said:Asian noodles and canned Asian foods
Keep things like soy sauce, Thai sweet chili sauce,
hoisin sauce, sesame oil, etc. around.
Quoted message said:tomato paste,
Rarely use.
Quoted message said:several types of box cake mixes, canned frosting,
Only use a mix for the Rhubarb custard cake. Never, ever,
use canned frosting.
Quoted message said:canned baked beans,
Nope. Never use (Well, once in a million years)
Quoted message said:Manwich, 8 cans of albacore,
Don't use.
Quoted message said:canned vegetables (several kinds),
only canned veg. I use is corn and I often have it but
it's not really a staple. I use it a lot but buy it
at the time.
Quoted message said:extra containers of cracked, regular and whole black pepper
Yep. Whole and ground black pepper. White pepper.
Quoted message said:1 box of Kosher salt
Nope.
Quoted message said:and 1 of sea salt
Nope.
Quoted message said:paper napkins and plates
Yep.
Quoted message said:bottled salad dressings, bottled BBQ sauce,
The salad dressing are only there because I rarely use
them so I buy them for a specific purpose and they languish
at the back of the fridge for years afterward. Not sure
that qualifies as a staple.
Quoted message said:1 extra jar Hellman's mayo, several varieties
of mustard
Miracle Whip and several varieties of mustard. Yep.
Quoted message said:assorted hot sauces,
Frank's and a Jamaican hot sauce. Yep.
Quoted message said:dehydrated items such as mushrooms and
chiles and lots of other odds and ends.
Nope, none of that.
Let's see. I always have regular *and* bread flour on
hand as well as a bag of semolina. In the fridge, besides
the Miracle Whip and mustards are several jams and jellies
and pickles (none of which I eat frequently - they're sort
of in the same class as the salad dressings - bought for
a purpose and left to molder for years) so don't know if
they actually qualify as staples.
I try to always have a stock of cornmeal, rolled oats,
and Cream of Wheat. Also grits. And various teas.
Beside white sugar there is always light and dark brown
sugar. In the spice cabinet, besides all the spices there
is molasses, honey, Worcestershire sauce, corn syrup (light
only), a jar of sugar with a vanilla bean in it, cocoa,
baking chocolate (chocolate chips are only bought as needed).
Also there is always Thai jasmine rice in my cupboard. And
pearled barley. And maple syrup (except when I run out several
months before the Maple Festival). And I always have ketchup
on hand - Heinz, of course. And then there's EVOO, balsamic
vinegar, red wine vinegar, white vinegar, cider vinegar, Japanese
rice wine vinegar. Those are always on hand. And another
cooking oil such as canola is always on hand. Also Crisco.
And we can't forget cat food. That is a very important
staple at my house! (I daren't run out of that. I'd be
afraid I'd wake up in the morning with several toes or
fingers missing, that is, if I even got to sleep in the
first place what with all the caterwauling Lucy, the
bottomless pit, would do. (Gaoth, thankfully is much
quieter about it, though she still likes to eat just as
much as Lucy.)
Well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
