Ding!
Wow, I can't believe it just clicked with me.
Micheal was going to use the GPs on a snowmobile to check the
distance of a lake that he will swim in later in the summer.Okay, stupid question......
if you had a buddy in a boat with you (and plan to again), why not
have them use the GPS then? It will be more accurate since you might
drift off course a bit while swimming.Because, I dont actually onw a GPS, I am going to borrow one. At the
time, I did not have access to it.Quoted message said:
Also, I find it pretty accurate to use something the the Google
pedometer to map out the course I plan to swim and get the distance
via satlletie imaging and GPS coordinates. I just re-mapped it and I
was only off by .12 miles from what I clicked on the web page and
think I swam in competition. I should have clicked more of the beach
as the start/stop points probably.I have tried Topo maps, and I want an exact distance, or at least as
close as I can get.
I assume you also don't normally have access to a boat, a snowmobile, or
a buddy -- which you will arrange for your next swim. Use the topo map or
online tools to get an idea ofthe distance so you can train.
Then arrange for your support person to also have a GPS, that way if you
swim off course a little bit and he follows you you will have the most
accurate trace possible (other than having your ear tagged with a GPS
unit by some preservation unit).
Seems more accurate and safer than traversing the ice. Once thawed out
the shoreline might be different becuase of water level fluctuations,
underwater obstacles etc.
Then again, it is only my opinion, ymmv as will your rationale for
decision making no doubt.
