has a patent number rather than the reference to the US patent office
and it lacks the instruction "read bearing here". These would both
appear to be indications of something made for the American market.
Quoted message said:This one has the patent numbers for Sweden, US, Canada, Switzerland &
Norway stamped into the bottom of the dial.
So has what is left of my type 1 but on the front it has what i take to
be the british patent number. However I also have a broken type 5,
smaller with a solid base, that was IIRC given to me by a friend in the
vain hope that I could use the intact capsule in that to repair my
broken type 1. That has the front hal o the plastic missing and is well
worn but I can just about make out both the "Reg. US. Pat. off." and the
"read bearing here" of your type. I can't see any year number. The only
possible year number on my type 1 is the 60 stamped on the underside of
the ring immediately after the Sweden in the address (no capsule). Ha,
looking again at the posted intructions that 60 is part of the address.
Quoted message said:Quoted message said:Are you sure the instructions originally came with that compass? The
illustrations are of a type 3 with the later type of plastic ring.
Quoted message said:I'd noticed that they seemed to be generic instructions but hadn't
taken in the plastic rings. The illustrations show an Explorer III
Type 7NL and a Type 3 both with plastic rings. It also refers to a
Type 5 so I presume that these are different types within the Explorer
III range.
Quoted message said:The instructions could well be a later version, there's no way of
knowing since it was picked up in a car boot sale. The box does have
the number 2 printed on it though.
If the compass does date from 72 then the instructions could well be
current. My type 3 which retired a couple of years ago with a leaking
capsule says MN 74 which might just be the right date although I
wouldn't discount the possibility (unless anyone knows for certain) that
the number refers to the Magnetic Inclination Zone.
