My parents bought a Silva compass for a bargain £1 at a car boot sale
the other day. It's got what looks like an aluminium bearing ring and
it got me wondering how old it is, as I've never seen one like it (not
that I've paid much attention) -

the typeface on the instructions suggests 1950's-60's to me -

    any ideas ?

Look under the rotating capsule - you might find a 2 digit year stamped
into the plastic. They have a super bargain at £1 - my Mark 1 is still
going strong after 30 odd years of use/abuse. Mine was a Christmas
present in about 1977 and has the same aluminium capsule.

I'm unfamiliar with the model names and numbers. When I looked up the
reference to the Explorer III in the instructions I saw that it's
still being made, so it wasn't much help for dating.
