We are going to Georgia to see a stage or 2 of the TdG. I would like to make a large sign on the road surface in support of some the of the riders. What do people generally use for this, chalk or latex paint? What is best? What is 'legal' in the USA?
It depends on how busy the road is. Chalk is non-permanent but will take time. Chalk also doesn't hold up well under traffic.
The quickest way to get it down is with a roller. It will look best with a stencil. This limits the size but allows you to do a repeating pattern. If you want something big use a roller and have someone watch traffic for you.
I would say that semi-permanence is not a bad thing. One of the cool things about riding over a col in France with a lot of Tour history is seeing the names of riders long since retired, still on the road. The Tour of Georgia is not quite in the same category but you have to start somewhere.
I remember something from the Lance Armstrong book, "It's Not About The Bike", where Lance was at a low point and returned to the USA to consider his future. He was riding on a climb in the the rain (in North Carolina, I believe) and on the pavement he saw an old faded message (I think it was "GO LANCE"😉 from a race years before. It seemed to be the turning point where he became focussed, committed, re-energized and just went straight up from there!
