-L. said:My Mom used to make the most awesome shortcake - very simple with
flour, sugar, milk, solid shortening (either Crisco or margerine - I
cannot remember which she used) and I-don't-know-what-else. The dough
was flaky and a bit dense but had a wonderful tenderness to it - not
cakey or spongy. I remember she didn't knead it long. Sadly she died
suddenly in '01 and this is one recipe I had never asked her for.Does anyone have a simple shortcake recipe that sounds similar?
TIA!

I grew up with Strawberry Shortcake from the Bisquick box which
looks pretty close to what your mother made.
2-1/4 cups Bisquick
3 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp margarine, butter, shortening
2/3 cup milk
Strawberries
Whipped Cream
Heat oven to 425°F. Stir together baking mix, sugar, margarine and
milk until soft dough forms. Drop by 9 spoonfuls onto ungreased
cookie sheet.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Split warm shorcakes,
bill and top with strawberries and cream.
