    I am currently running a 52/42/30. I want to swap out the 42 for a 39. Does
the 39 have to be pinned and ramped like the 42 is now? TIA

Definitely not if you're using front indexing, and possibly not if you
are (front indexing works fine on my MTB's ancient Deore DX triple, with
    the original SG rings).

STI shifters are more finicky than MTB thumb shifters. I would go for the
pinned middle ring if you are using STI. TA makes nice chainrings that are
    compatible with Shimano triples.
