I have an all carbon 1" fork. Steerer is carbon. I use a 1.125" stem
with the included shim. I do not line up the slits. I put the shim
slit towards the front. And of course the stem slit is towards the
back. But every month or so the headset loosens up a little bit. So I
check the headset every so often and readjust it when needed. Due to
the stem being aluminum, the bolts being steel, and the size to use a
4mm Allen wrench, I don't overtighten the stem clamp. I suspect the
stem clamping force is dissipated too much by having the shim. I do
not line up the slits for the reasons mentioned, gouging the edges into
the steerer tube.
Maybe the only solution is to buy a stem that is 1" and does not
require a shim. I will try this next time I order from Nashbar and see
a discontinued 1" stem for $8. Or find one super cheap somewhere.
