  1. I've had an interesting experience with this post that I want to share.
I've got a passing interest in nutrition because, like most Americans,
I'm at least a little overweight. But what's interesting is this -
when I go to the google user group on nutrition, I don't what the heck
they are talking about! They are at such a detailed level regarding
every substance under the sun, and whether or not you should put into
your body, that it would take me a couple months to even start to
understand the culture. So it obviously ocurred to me that newbies who
come onto this group to learn a little bit about swimming must be
incredibly disapointed. "Straight arm catch", "drive the high hip
down", "loping rhythm" ... they've wandered into an aquatic nightmare.

I've made some really easy to understand pages for newbies.

One is a couple hints if you're afraid of the water.
    http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/FearOfWater/FearOfWater.html
Then how to go from nothing to 1650.
    http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/SwimWorkouts.html/ZeroTo1mile.html
Then just a few simplified workouts.
    http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/IntroToSwimWorkouts.html
Then the 2 or 3 thousand yard workouts I made up for a masters group.
    http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/e/x/exk7/PreviousSwimWorkouts.html
Also pages on basic swimming for triathletes, another for basic
triathlon, and another for flip turns.

First thing in the morning I check to see where a few of the one to two
thousand hits I get daily come from because those will be in a different
time zone. It's hard to believe that in Iraq and Israel and such
places, where you have to worry about surviving a walk down the street,
there are people who would just like to swim a little better. Not to be
political, but should someone tell the powers that be that not everyone
in the mid-east is looking for what we're sending over with our
soldiers, but really would like to get a better understanding of loping
rhythm and the straight arm catch, that the aquatic nightmare is to be
preferred over the ones we're giving them now.

    user group on nutrition<<

    The best one is sci.med.nutrition

There are some VERY knowledgeable people there. And the only thing
people are more passionate about than swimming technique is politics
and the only thing that they are more passionate about than politics is
    food.

So when you are arguing the finer points of diet on sci.med.nutrition,
you are REALLY swimming with the sharks.
