Not really. Like it or not some people (including myself occasionally)
ride on sidewalks, and no anicdotal story is going to change that. So
if it's going to happen folks on both sides should to be careful.

From now on I'm a firm believer that noone (except me on occasion)
    should ride on sidewalks.

I agree. You just stated the argument in favor of handing out condoms
    in schools too I believe.

And me, and maybe a few of my friends. Oh, and occasionally John
Forester and Frank K. But that's it.

    Not really, it does happen.

I ride on the occasional sidewalk when there is no safe way to ride on
the road. When I do this (rarely) I make sure to ride at walking speed
and to go with the flow at maybe 2 MPH just to stay upright. At a
crosswalk I will often walk with the other pedestrians and only remount
the bike when it is safe to do so. There are some requirements for
staying alive in city traffic and showing just how macho a biker you are
is not one of them. If you consider it a personal disgrace to get off
the bike when common sense says you should, then find a good shrink. A
side benefit is that you get some blood flowing to those parts that are
normally impeded by too much saddle time. My hands even feel a bit less
tingly from hours on the bars. Riding is only fun when not done as a
    passenger in an ambulance.
Bill Baka (been there,(ambulance), done that, no fun).
