    What about all of you?

Aged about 10, coming down a v.steep hill v.fast on my BMX.

At the bottom of the hill, the road veers sharply to the right, but a
path continues straight on for about 20 yards until it hits the main road.

As I neared the bottom of the hill, I applied the front brake. The cable
snapped. Due to my poor bike maintenance skills at the time, my rear
    brake was no help either.

So I put both feet to ground and hope for the best...

I eventually stopped within inches of the edge of the main road, just as
a HUGE juggernaut sped past, the smell of burning rubber emanating from
    my trainers.

First thing I did when I got home (after changing my shorts) was learn
how to keep my brakes in order!

Of course if it happened now, the first thing you'd do would be to buy a
helmet, secure in the knowledge that it would have saved your life.
