Excess salt causes hypertension in many people, especially children.
Excess sodium chloride may also impede absorption of other salts
that contain essential nutrients - phosphorus, potassium etc.
Personally I recommend the USA 2005 dietary guidelines
(see http://sankey.ws/dietref.html for links to this and some
other dietary questions).
If your salt intake is considerably in excess of these guidelines,
I recommend slowly decreasing it. Excess salt is an acquired taste
and can be corrected.
