But they're not. They're /more/ waterproof than most packs because the
cotton in the cotton/nylon mix swells up to block the stitching holes to
some degree, but the seams aren't formally sealed and I use a liner in
my Ascent, and the outside of that liner has been wet at the end of a day.

If you want a fully waterproof pack then Craghoppers have a waterproof
range and so do Vau De. Ortlieb do some waterproof daypacks. But even
with a fully waterproof pack don't forget that liners come in handy to
stop stuff getting wet from e.g. the soaking wet waterproof jacket
you've just put in since the sun came out again.

Try Wickes - the building supplies people. They do some 'rubble bags'
in multi-pack. They're exceedingly strong and they're transparent
which helps with finding stuff!

I've just bought a new one because the old one started leaking in
heavy rain. It was 12 years old and despite rough handling for most
of that time never let any water (though the compartment in the top
flap occasionally leaked after really heavy rain). Perhaps I was just
lucky, by the sounds of it the new one will get a good test on Sunday.

Unfortunately it stayed hot, sunny, and dry all day so didn't get a
chance to test the waterproofness of my new rucksack :-(
