I stop the bike in the small crowd at the Aid Station, and guzzle
Gatorade. A bunch of the Dirt Rag crew are there, Maurice Tierney and
Thanita Adams and a few other people. They are drinking beer and
smoking cigarettes. Beer and smokes in the feed zone. I love it. The
smell of the cigarettes is marvelous, and I feel an intense craving. I
drink more Gatorade. I linger too long. I don't want to get back on the
bike. Suddenly, from behind, comes a cheerful cry: "Yo, Corvus!"

    It's J.

    My jaw drops.

"Come take a look at this!" she announces proudly. She draws a small
crowd, bent over her rear wheel. She has done a McGuyver on her
    tensioner:

Wow! I'm impressed. But get her a bike with track ends for the love of
    god! She deserves it!

It has been about four and a half hours. We ride the last mile of the
    course together.

After that, we go out and get stinking wasted.

Beautiful. Good job to you both.

Matt (I think the cig smell might have made me barf)

I dunno. As much as bling singlespeeds are all the rage these days,
converting that old beater into a one-geared weapon of self destruction
is so much more in keeping with the spirit of things, IMO.

Well, there's bling, and there's bikes like Surly or OnOne. You could
even get an inexpensive retrofit of that bike.

But I guess she's doing well on that one too, as long as the course has
    sticks.

Some of us *need* that 0-dish rear wheel and a frame made specifcally
to stand up to the extra rigors of singlespeeding.

If she ever grows to six-foot-eight, a custom frame will definitely be
    in order.

    CC (curiously excited...)

    P.S.: I built her a beautiful hand-crafted zero-dish wheel myself. So
    there.
