Turns out that somebody had taken a fall into a beehive, and the swarm
had attacked the pack of riders. I worry about J. behind me, but I
find out later that she had cleaned the technical section and also
escaped the swarm. A five mile climb through continuous rock gardens
with swarms of killer bees. On a singlespeed. It just doesn't get any
better than that, folks.
I've had this happen in a race too. But I was on a geared bike. Didn't
seem to help much with the bees. It was windy and I think it got knocked
down on the trail. I got one in the back of my knee and some other guys
got several. Nasty stuff.

This is one of those moments in a marriage. I realize that I am not
doing any good here. She does not want my advice. She does not want her
husband telling her what to do and what not to do."I've got to go," I say. "I love you."
"Go," she says.
I saddle up and ride off as the trail turns downhill.
It's cool you guys got to see each other in the race, even if it wasn't
under ideal circumstances. I've never had that experience (when we're
both racing), but I definitely know the kind of moment. Sounds like you
both handled it well.
