What you're proposing may be considered overkill but it seems you are really
worrying about being embarrassed. Embarrassment is really worrying about
how others see us. What we do happily in our own house we would feel
embarrassed doing outside your home and all that. On the basis that there
may not be anyone to see you on a ridge walk then there won't be anything
for you to embarrassed about so if it means someone can enjoy a walk then
    why not go for it!

I think I'd go further. Surely this is about helping you friend become more
confident on the mountains? Perhaps after a few uses of the rope they might
feel more confident without it. Mind you, I'd make the friend carry the rope
in their pack - that might just swing it!

I must admit than I am always fascinated by my attitudes to mountain
heights. I never seem to worry about them - usually because there is only
    one way to go!
