I dunno what rivnuts or hose clamps are :-( so I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I use a Zefal Bottle Cage Gizmo Clamp to attach a cage where no bosses are.
I guessed that Rivnut was some sort of glue, though Google tells me otherwise.
Hose clamps are what I was brought up to know as jubilee clips. They're invaluable for mounting bottle cages to tubes that are too fat for the sort of gubbins you're thinking of: <URL:http://www.speedy5.freeserve.co.uk/z-bottle.jpg>
