Thanks for all the reports. I am stunned and fascinated by your efforts.
Also a little envious.

One question that rises is whether the geared and the ungeared should
compete on the same terms in future races. There seem to be little
doubt that the geared unis have a big advantage when racing over long
distances and varied topography.

Yeah, but NZUni is holding it's own on ungeared's against all the geared
cokers. They are conspicuously lonely in the top ten though...

I think that Ken said above that Tony was riding mainly on the geared
(schlumpf) 29er so that would count as geared

Team 23 "Lost Wheelers" are I believe all riding ungeared 36ers and are
doing very well (six or seventh place I think) :D

Still it seems as though a geared 29 would be little competition to a
geared 36 given equal riders on flattish terrain.

It's great to see the rapid developement of road unicycling. It's come
a long way from the old steel rimmed Coker Big One.

Depending on the cranks used on either of the geared unis a geared 29
could achieve a similar speed as a geared 36.

Perhaps the difference is not so big now. But who believes that
development will make a halt? Soon we will have geared hubs that can
shift faster and more easily – and why not a third gear? If a race is
ment to be a competition between individuals I believe the machines
must be fairly equal.

On the same time I welcome the technical developement and find it very
exciting.

course line.

edit ; Have just had another look, they are all on the Fleur-de-Lis
trail, but have gone in the opposite direction to the blue line

I agree. It was when I learned that all unis (geared and fixed) would
be treated "equally" that I decided not to join the race... I've since
come to regret that, a bit, because I know so many riders, and would
have simply enjoyed a) the challenges involved, b) the excellent
company of friends (and family!) and new acquaintances... oh, and c)
the scenery!

I happen to love my fixed (that is non-gear) Coker, and am not
compelled by the experience (albeit very limited, which may change) of
riding geared 29" or 36"s.

There are a lot more fixed-gear riders/unis (currently, anyway) out
there than not, and it seems to me a more fair and inclusive
competition would be to distinguish geared vs. non-. Given teams of
mixed machinery (some geared, some not) I'm not sure how this could be
accomplished, and I suppose from an organizer's point of view, there
just could be no pleasing everyone.

Anyway, I've had fun (vicariously) keeping up with the race and my
buddies (and brother!). Looking forward to hearing more stories from
the riders themselves (Ken, and others-- excellent reports!) and seeing
some pictures/video.

I don't think it's at all clear yet that gunis are strictly more
advantageous that fixed gears. Notice that Ken has been consistently
in the top group of riders and he is riding a 36" fixed with 114mm
cranks.

It would also be a mistake to conclude that gunis are a huge advantage
from the fact that most of the top teams are riding gunis; correlation
does not imply causation. It is natural that the teams at the front
are the most serious about long-distance, fast unicycling, and would
want to be on the bleeding edge of unicycle technology (and not mind
paying for it). It may be that gunis are a big advantage, but I think
it's too soon to conclude that yet. Another way to even out the
playing field between fixed and geared in future races would be to
include some stages that include mostly climbing. Perhaps there could
be some restriction that riders have to use the same uni for the whole
stage?

Go TexaCali indeed! Looking good.

I was surprised to see that today's leg has a large off-road portion.
(screen capture attached)
It appears that many of the teams chose to stay on the road even though
it is considerably farther. I imagine the 36" wheels would have an
advantage over the 29ers on the channel crossings.

Scott, thank you for including a screen capture, even if it was only
for fun. Somehow, I can't get the GPS maps to work neither at home nor
at work. Now I can see what they look like at least, even though a
single screen shot is a far cry from live coverage.
