Sorry, but I've been off-line for a few months. Thanks for the
interesting discussion. I had wanted to add a little about a strange
reflector I recently came across. It is mounted on the rear mudguard of
an old bike which I purchased just after going off-line. It's a round
glass type, about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches dia., mounted in an aluminium
'can', or base, and has a long steel strap to mount to the mudguard and
a similar one underneath, with two screws and nuts at each end. No name
on it that I can see. It would have slid down and off, the clamp
arrangement being quite unsuitable, so the owner has mounted it just
above the wire stays, and thus the upward angle renders it ineffective.
Clearly it was never made for a bicycle, perhaps it was susposed to be
fitted to the bumper bar of an old car. The odd thing is that it
features little round bumps standing proud of the surface for the means
of reflection. And all done in glass. Just another branch in the
evolutionary chain, I guess. Great bike, though. Very original. 28 inch
tyres, mechanical cyclometer, Lycett saddle with 3 coil springs, double
bell, Eadie Coaster hub, Renold chain. The frame tubes are clean as a
whistle inside. Probably 1950's. Paul Aslanides.
