I don't buy that theory at all! I started eating less and less meat from
about age 12 and was a total vegetarian by age 16. From then on, I ate very
little in the way of processed foods and no meat until I became pregnant at
age 38. I developed GD and continued to eat the vegetarian diet throughout
most of the pregnancy. I then developed anemia that worsened severely after
I had the baby. I had no choice but to eat red meat because iron pills
alone weren't enough. When the anemia abated, I went back to the vegetarian
diet, only to be diagnosed with type 2 one year after giving birth. I
continued on the vegetarian diet until anemia knocked me flat again. I
would still prefer to eat a vegetarian diet and indeed most of my meals are
vegetarian. But I find that I must eat meat at least twice a week or the
anemia leaves me too weak and tired.
