"Gritting it out" is what u used to describe Webb's performance. I look at it a bit differently. Webb was smoked by Kipchoge. Breaking the Amercian record and barely at that is non factor when u end up losing the race by almost 5 secs.

I agree kipchoge ran a beautiful race. I don't know where you're from. I'd always cheer the local getting a record for their country. I happen to be American, but I'm not generally a fan of Alan Webb, though he very obvously did "grit it out" to get 2nd, and it was a strong effort.

Webb also ran the 4k and 12k national XC championships, too, one day apart. He qualified for the national XC team for the 4k and dropped out halfway through the 12k after running much of it in 2nd place. He doesn't seem to be ducking challenges.
