I use an older version of this rack trunk:

which has the virtue of being expandable and inexpensive. It's big
enough for my tools, glasses, and other incidentals, plus a rolled up
shirt/socks/underwear bundle, and maybe a book or two.
I add a pannier or two as needed, such as when I'm carrying in pants
and towels, or carrying rain gear.
I very rarely carry shoes, which I just leave at work.
