I need a back rack pack which will carry shoes and one change of clothing
(for commuting to work). Any recommendations? Some packs I see
advertised seem too narrow to carry much, but on the other hand I don't want
    a suitcase back there.

    I'm happy with a pair of Trek panniers, 10.5" long x 3.5" wide x 15"
tall. (Trek dealer was the only LBS with panniers when I bought them
maybe 5 years ago.) Shoes go on one side, rolled up clothes go on the
other with a belt and baggie full of pocket stuff. There's enough extra
room for cool-weather jacket from the morning commute to fit in either
side on the warm afternoon commute. Enough room on the other side for a
    towel, too!
