Finally, can anyone give me a link to a site which might contain
details of any long (about 20 miles) walks from Birmingham to
    surrounding areas?

Firstly, if your idea is to do occasional very long walks in order to
lose weight, then it is flawed, not to mention possibly dangerous. If
you are not used to walking you need to start small and build up
gradually. Besides, you will achieve better weight loss by doing a
little every day rather than by doing a lot once a week. The
    government.s recommendation of 10,000 steps a day is a good one. (a
cheap pedometer will help you keep a tally) Combined with a calorie
controlled diet (around 1500 a day) you will lose weight. You should
aim at 1-3 lbs a week.

The walking needs to be brisk. It will make you ache but back off if
you feel any real pain or discomfort. Probably a good idea get a check
up with the doctor first, just to be on the safe side.

I try to do two circuits of my local park every day (about 2.5 miles) at
a fairly brisk pace. At weekends I do longer walks but not the kind you
    are thinking of.

For most people here a good surface for walking is the exact opposite of
what you describe. Britain has a vast network of paths and ways and
they offer a way of getting away from it all and enjoying stunning views
and fresh country air. Most discussion about walking will be off road
    walking.
