When I borrowed blue-shift from harper earlier this year it took several
weeks to get fully comfortable with it. Over those weeks my average
speed and top speed gradually improved, and ultimately overtook my
Coker.
When I borrowed Purple Phaze from Pete (I borrow a lot of unicycles I
guess :-) I noticed the same effect.
It takes a lot of time in the saddle for your riding reflexes to 100%
adapt to a new unicycle, and this perfect adaptation is crucial when
riding unicycles with a huge effective diameter. It took me about sixty
miles of practice riding on Purple Phaze before I could beat my Blue
Shift one mile time, and I never did get the top speed above Blue
Shift's. I'm sure with more time in the saddle I would have, but it
takes many hours.
So, the Schlumpf-mobile will triumph, although getting the right tire
will be important for ease of riding.
My mile times, for what it's worth, are:
Coker: 4:06
Blue Shift: 3:45
Purple Phaze: 3:26
These are all eminently beatable, but they are my current bests.
Apparently longer names equals better times. It was good to finally beat
the best runners, although I do a moving start which is an unfair
advantage.
