I am thinking about running a 1/2 in East Moline, IL on Sep 26.

Should I expect portapotties to be along the way? (i had some rather
    serious runners trots recently).

They will certainly have them at the start. According to their web site
    at http://www.qcmarathon.org/course.htm:

Preparing your bowels for a long run is pretty much a trial and error
type thing. I've worked it out now so that I never have to relieve myself
while on any run, including over 20 miles and up to marathon distance. I
also know which foods are likely to give me problems and I stay away from
those the day before any long run or race (limiting dairy products works
for me). The main thing is to not eat anything unusual.

Should I buy some sort of a "hydration pack", or will plain water be
    available on the way?

They will have water. This is from the web site:

Several aid stations located along course with water, All Sport, GU
Energy Gel, Vaseline and medical aid.

Unless your paleo diet prohibits it, I would get used to the All Sport
durring your training runs. If not, get used to drinking water. Depending
on your sweat rate and the temperature on race day, you may need to take
in a liter or so of fluids. while running.

Should I expect to return where I start off?

How much before the start should I show up?

That depends on the crowds and the logistics of getting there. If it's a
big race (lots of runners), then you'll want to have plenty of time to
    queue for the porta pottie.

  2. If you're not a troll, then... oh nevermind.

Some ultra runners take immodium before their runs to prevent gastro
    problems...

yea, thanks. I saw that tidbit also. Do you know if these areas are
frequent. I would hate to be caught with a bowel attack on the
official 1/2 marathon, without toilets nearby. 🙂 The experience last
    night was nearly disastrous.

Thanks, I did not see that, my fault.

    yesterday, also.

A bottle of it, not one dose. Runners have a quicker metabolism, especially
    during a marathon.
