Please don't think of this so much as a wild assed hairy stab-in-the-dark guess
so much as a bit of possibly useful information from a related technology. Bike
computers use a simple cheap reed relay to sense the magnet on the spokes for
counting wheel revolutions. Two of those could be wired so as to give an
indication of direction to the controller.
Reed relays are available at Radio shack last I looked.
