I've been under the impression that the US provides essentially free
education up to any level you desire. Am I wrong?

Yes. Also, the share of the tuition a student has to cover
out-of-pocket has been inching up over the last several years. As
states and the federal government have backed off funding for grants
(as well as direct appropriations for State schools) the colleges and
universities have stepped up to fill in the gap. However, they do so
in a competitive environment so it is not nearly as egalitarian as one
would hope for in a free society that values upward mobility from
lower income classes to middle and upper classes.

These words are too big for me, I barely understand what that's
    supposed to mean.

    😉
    Usenet Class is hard.

Borrowing some of these big words, somehow the
society still managed to egalitaristically upward-mobil me from the
lowest possible class (I had to borrow money in the airport from a
stranger to buy a plane ticket to the US).

Then I got an American Ph.D. while literally being paid to study: I
was doing research for my dissertation which was called "research
assistantship" and that paid my tuition, books, and everything else.

Sounds like free education to me.

You wowed them with your monstrous delts and biceps, I imagine.

(or was it the shiny hook?)

They couldn't resist the proposed topic "Cretene vegeble steriod as a
    foil to the reductionist kickback".

    And who wouldn't?? 😉

I've caught the clips and pics you've posted; impressive delts and
    biceps, seriously.

    Good Job!

Thank you. Would this be a good time to mention one more time that arm
isolation exercises are a total waste of time? 🙂

It's always a good time to point that out! Speaking for myself, I
emphasize heavy compound lifts and can do several unassisted pullups.
I rarely bother with any direct arm work.

How did you train for your first pullup, or what do you think
contributed to the success - weighted pulldowns, assisted pullups,
    negatives?

Nothing fancy (I work out at home), just a chair to boost me up and
neg reps. Then when I could do one unassisted, I'd do that 'one'
several times a day, until I could do more than one at a time -- and
    so on.

It's probably worth mentioning that I'd been lifting for about a year,
regularly doing deads, along with some rows and military presses.
