Nothing, apart from not crashing it into things. The paint *is* the protection, and should survive by itself if it's any good.
But a DIY paint job is likely to chip off easily from slight knocks, unless you do an exceptionally good job..

Doing lots of reading on this recently (bike now in bike paint shop) I came across a car painter turned bike painters page online who said spraying a bike frame was totally different to spraying a car and that it took him 10 bikes to get it right.
