More likely sheer incompetence and the pursuit of fame, riches,

They have learned that the publication of outrageous stories with
lots of shock value sells magazines. Just as the various other
"news" outlets ("news"papers, radio, TV, what-have-you) have learned
the same. Selling their entertainment product (for that's what it
is--it certainly isn't "news"😉 to the largest audience they can
garner, regardless the reason, sells advertising space. Advertising
space is where the money is.
