Since I have 'always' known how to wire a plug for as long as I can
remember, and certainly at least since I was a child of about 12, I must say
I have never given a second thought to the idea that people should be able
to connect their own plugs to their own appliances. To me, it's more like
one of the basic life skills, as fundamental as being able to replace a
lightbulb, or a fuse, or tie your own shoelaces. But if you don't know how
to do something, don't do it. It doesn't mean everyone else should be
prevented from doing something that is within the capacity of any normally
intelligent and literate adult willing to read the label.
