    in my state, most all of that is done by salaried state public
    defenders. They're the ones that choose where they devote their time,
    and anyone who attributes an hourly private attorney fee to their
    efforts is grossly overestimating the actual cost by several times.

    And with this is where the real problems occur.

    When I started doing social work, I could not understand why so many people
    that could not afford attorney's would pass up public defenders. Then as I
    worked in the system, I realized that many public defenders are not worth
    having on your team.

    They're overworked and underpaid.

    the courtroom is getting heated or air conditioned, and . . .
