Everybody's telling you good stuff. One thing that's invaluable is finding
a friend who is knowlegable about bikes. They may be able to tell you if
some of the info (from your Local Bike Shop or here) you're getting is
straight BS or possibly slanted towards the bikes they are trying to move
for various reasons. They may also become a good riding buddy to help you
figure out some of the basics of safe trail riding.
Aside from personal preferences, a knowlegable friend will at least be able
to tell you if the sales rep knows what they are talking about. I've seen a
few that don't seem to know their bottom brackets from their headsets.
