The best socks that I have work in recent years - by a long way - are Smartwool. The walking socks come in two weights, the Hiker and the Trekker - the Hiker are fabulous and would seem to be what you are after.
Lots of people seem to agree about Smartwool inlcuding those walkers who work in shops. The mags seem to have Bridgedale out in front but these are nowhere near as comfortable.

Yes. I bought a pair last week and was very pleased with them this weekend.
