I've got SKS Chromplastics on my winter road bike, no problem.
SKS Shockboards on my mtb, any problems are small recompense for not having
saddle & shorts ground away by grit at the back and a face full of [censored] at
the front.
I was one of the first in my circle to a have a rear Crud Guard many moons
ago and I could see it was deemed uncool but while I accept I'll get a fair
bit of muck on me mtbing I don't see the point in getting it on sooner and
in greater quantity than neccessary.
As for front guards, some kind is a must, even if only a basic dt Crud
Guard, to keep various types of faeces off your face and out of eyes. One
trip my buddy forgot his front guard and got something astringent in his
eyes from the road despite wearing quality goggles, not a happy bunny!
Nothing on the summer road bike as it's only used in fair weather or at
worst en-route showers.
I think the reason many folks I see don't have guards is because the cheapo
bikes they have came without and their pockets and/or imagination doesn't
stretch to decent guards.
