I suspect that your mate Gareth's bike didn't cost under £500 though,
and indeed quite possibly nearer £3000.

It cost him nothing, but as far as I know the full cost was in the
region of fifteen hundred. Interestingly he's running a double chainset
- not as big as a road double, but the granny ring was part of the
weight he felt happy to ditch.
