    I have a Gelert toaster which is sort of a pyramid design comprising
    four sets of wire which interlock when erected - not very successful. It
    would be better if I toasted 4 slices at a time - not really required.

    I now have a rectangular toaster which folds flat, then you open it up
    to form a sort of open box. the base is a fine mesh which goes over the
    flame and the top is a grid of four bars on which you place the bread.
    the top and bottom are locked in the open position. The control is
    excellent and does one piece at a time - fine for me.

    Incidentally - it wasn't and impulse buy, and is certainly not useless -
    therefore technically off topic :-)
