That's an older Chrylser minivan, and the hood is not that soft on
those. I could see it being at 25 or 30 if the kid was doing 10 or so
toward the van, causing a head-on collision. I don't think you'd get
that much damage in an overtaking situation with a lower relative speed.
But your question is still a good one, which I'm sure the police are
trying to determine. I'm sure they also have better ways of determining
the relative speed of the collision than you and I do just looking at a
picture.

I could see that too ... anyone who's seen the damage resulting from
vehicles hitting animals knows that flesh is surprisingly tough material as
well.

Sometimes kids just come out of nowhere. I know because I was that kid
once, and came pretty darn close to getting hit a couple of times. Yes I
did have good parents, but I still got away from them every once in a while.
