It is low and erratic, not low and steady, like a bad contact, but I can't press or jiggle it into operation, like normal.
Most likely a bad cable or faulty switch, then.

The plating on the holder contacts often wears off causing the underlying metal to oxidise and cause a bad connection. You can clean it but the problem will persist. Only solution really is to buy a new one.
