  1. Although montygram's views on PUFAs are extreme, I personally back
his statement that omega-6 PUFAs are undesirable in a human diet.

Omega-3 PUFAs are a totally different matter. Whether they can be
found to be carcinogenic or not, whether they peroxidize or not, is
irrelevant. They are essential to the operation of human brains.

For me the question is: how much omega-3 do we need as adults to
maintain our brains? I haven't yet seen a quantitative study of that
question that I trust. Until then, I shall make sure I consume a
    significant quantity of them.

This recently posted study implies that increasing polyunsaturated fats is
    also acceptable (not ideal).

    "*What this study adds*
    [...]
Polyunsaturated lipids are an acceptable substitute when monounsaturated
    lipids are not readily available"

Especially DHA seems to be important.

Would omega-3 PUFAs from flax seed be preferred over fish or does it
    matter?

It does matter. I think that it is ideal to get *both* alpha-linolenic acid
from plant sources and EPA, DHA and DPA from fatty fish or fish oils. The
elongation does not work very well (especially from EPA to DHA), and so it
is good to include the long chain fatty acids to diet as well. For men, the
non-extracted sources of alpha-linolenic acid are better as alpha-linolenic
acid has been associated with increased prostate cancer. So its is better
for men to eat some walnuts or flax seeds than to use flax seed oil.

    Thank for the info.
