The BHF site says the busses must be pre booked - do they really mean
    that
or will we be able to blag it on the day?

Last year they really meant it. Access to the coaches was via a long
queue into a fenced-off area, and they were checking that everyone
    had tickets.

Transport to/from L2B is a nightmare whatever you do. This year me and
SWMBO are cycling the 42-odd miles from N. Herts to the start, and
staying in Brighton for the night, just to avoid all the hassle.

On the early L2Bs mass-accommodation was available at minimal cost on
floors of school halls and community centres.

    That seems to have ceased.
