Hi everyone. I have a few basic questions to ask. I'm a 22 year old
male, 225 lbs, 6'2", bmi of roughly 29-30. I'm considering changing my
diet to 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat with 1800 calories. I have
figured out how to do it with 5x cheese sandwiches on whole wheat and 5
scoops of protein powder. I've lived most of my life with maybe 10g of
protein consumption per day. I just learned a bit about nutrition and
am trying to incorporate it into a gym plan.

If you want to gain muscle, you should eat more calories. 1800 is way
too little. You should opt for a lot more. Find some caloric calculators
to see how much you would burn during a day that includes a workout. My
guess is that you should eat at lest 3000/day.

The diet you came up with is not good. To gain muscle eat meat, eggs and
complex carbs (like rice, bulgur, etc) with vegetables at every meal.

    My questions are:

    1. Should a multivitamin be taken with food?

    yes

    2. Should calcium supplements be taken after much delay after the
    multivitamin?

If you take the multivit in the middle of the meal, you can then take
    calcium at the end.

    3. How safe will this regime be (I've never had that much protein
    ever)?

There is only one way to find out. If you start small and don't overdo
on anything you should be fine.

    4. Can muscle soreness and stiffness be attributed to longterm lack of
    protein?

Yes. Soreness and stiffness can also be caused by lactic acid, which
builds up in the muscle cells during anaerobic exercise - that is when
you exercise very hard your cells do not use oxygen, only sugar, and
    lactic acid is created.

You should get a good book on sport nutrition.

  2. Thank you for your responses everyone. I have a question regarding
protein intake. From what I've read online, most people are aiming for
..7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. In my case that would
    be 157-225 grams.

Restricting my diet to 1800 calories, this would range from 35% to 50%
protein. Would 35% protein, 45% carbs and 20% fat be ok? I'm looking to
lose about 30-40 pounds of fat while not losing any muscle. Building
more would be nice but not a necessity at this point.

Dawid - Could you recommend such a book perhaps with a bit of focus on
    nutrition timing as well?

    Montygram - Could I use a supplement called "O-Calcium plus D" with
500mg of elemental calcium and 125 IU Vitamin D in place of the calcium
    citrate and vitamin D seperately?

Thanks in advance for your advice everyone.
