Since the Bike Events brochure came in the post, I've been thinking
about doing the Manchester 100 ride in September.

I'm a very overweight 30-something who mainly uses her bike for
pootling to the shops and such. The furthest I usually ride is about
5 miles. Oh and my bike is [censored] (tho there is a possibility I might
be getting a shiny new one in July).

How realistic is it that I could be able to cycle 62 miles in one day
by September? Obviously I'd need to train/practice, can any suggest
    how much and how often?

Not necessarily a stoopid idea :-)

You just need to train for the event.

Gradually increase frequency, length & intesity of rides to build up to the
required distance. If you are very overweight - seriously consider losing
some excess if you can. I know it's not easy, I've struggled with
weight-issues my entire adult life. Since mid-Dec 04 I've been quite
determined and am going to a local WeightWatchers class. This is working for
me and as of last Thurday evening, I'd lost a total of 39lbs. Weigh-in again
tonight! It works for me because I'm mentally prepared for it, I *want* to
do it, I weigh it, and write it down in a food diary before it goes in my
mouth. I managed that sort of distance in a day on a fully loaded bike last
August in France and I'm lighter now than I was then - by a considerable
amount, so if this middle-aged fatbirdonabike can do it, I think pretty much
    anyone can :-)

Go for it and best of luck, helen s

Well done you! I joined WW in January but my loss has been ahem
"erratic". So I'm hoping the extra cycling brings my weight down
    some.

Thanks - for me the key to WW success is definitely the tracking and doing
full choice as opposed to no count.

don't talk to me about NoCount. I'm one of those people it doesn't
seem to work for. A whole week of being good, following all the NC
rules, exercising, and I stayed the same. I'm back on full choice
    now.

Just got back from WI - lost 2lbs this week, which is a sensible amount to
lose in a week. No Count would not work for me - I *have* to track it all.

    Cheers, helen s
