    What inspires you to run?

The joy of running through fields and forests, watching the mountains
and trees around me, wind in my hair. This time of year, sun beating
down on me (although this is going to get boring after a week or so
more). Winter - snow falling gently around me - or sun beating down on me.

I want to be healthy and in-shape but this
doesn't seem to be enough some days to get me out on the road. I want
to want to run, if that makes sense!

Try trails. Even on the days when it's dark or not-so-nice weather, I
know that improved conditioning by running consistently will make each
run more enjoyable - and, over time, I'll be able to enjoy longer runs
into the forests and above treeline. Sometimes it's the challenge of
running under whatever conditions ma nature throws at me that day that
excites me; other times it's the memories (past and future) of some of
the get views or exhiliarating downhills or other experiences that keep
    me moving.

This is one of my favorite quotes:
"You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So
why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is
below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one
sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an
art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one
saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know."
    Rene Daumal

The not-so-good days are the "lower regions". The good days are the
    "summits".

  2. Dot, great point! Thanks for the inspiration. I live in Seattle where
great trails are relatively close. If I can get my motivation in gear,
I'll try doing one trail run a week and see how it goes.
